What is Waste in a Knowledge-Worker's World Like Ours?
Hi,
This third video comes from the third series of our collection which is all about feeling and seeing "waste" although it does not physically exist, after all, our work is all about knowledge.
What do I mean by this? Well, when we walk around a factory or a manufacturing plant, we can physically see waste everywhere. Indeed this is the realm of the Lean manufacturing gurus, to eek-out every last bit of waste possible. However, in a knowledge-workers world, there is nothing to "see". So how do we detect it? How do we know it is even there? Usually it comes down to your emotions, namely frustration. Underlying it will be some form of waste.
Therefore, in this video, I will ...
- Explain why it is harder to detect waste in an office environment.
- Introduce you to three categories of waste.
- Make it obvious why we cannot see waste.
- Help you to become more aware of waste.
- Share with you a simple model that illustrates that waste is often due to delay.
- Show you how to use your emotions to detect waste.
If all the members of an Agile team start to become more aware of waste and what it looks like and the impact it has, then a whole new world of continuous improvement opportunity will be uncovered.
